New Spain account book, 1576-1590.

Account book kept by royal treasury officials in Fresnillo, Viceroyalty of New Spain, to record the receipts from miners working at the silver mines of Fresnillo and Mazapil, located in Zacatecas (a state in north central Mexico), from Apr. 16, 1576- Aug. 14, 1590 with some gaps (e.g. 1585). Spanish settlers and indigenous laborers worked the mines from the 1560s. As recorded in the day book, royal officials weighed the raw silver and assigned values in maravedis. After taxes were deducted, the miners received the remaining value in silver. Entries record the names of the miners and owners of the claim. Royal officials such as Gaspar del Espinosa, Francisco Beltran, and Alalcara de Mesa added their signatures at the end of each day's transactions. Fols. 234r-240v are blank.
